Auckland Top 5 Tips

Sharing is caring!

With the largest city in New Zealand being most people’s port of call, it’s important to hit the ground running. In this article, I am going to offer you 5 of my top tips for the ‘City Of Sails’ and how to maximise your time before exploring the rest of Aotearoa.

1. AT Hop Card

This may be one of the most simple tips but also one that is an absolute must! The ‘Auckland Transport HOP’ card is a prepaid card that allows travel across buses, trains, and ferries within the district of Auckland. Working in a very similar way to the London Oyster Card, these cards allow easy tap-on-tap-off payments on all transport. AT HOP cards also provide an integrated fare, meaning you can transfer between AT buses, trains, and ferries and pay just one fare for numerous zones you travel. This is also capped at just $10 a day for the time being.

Using an AT HOP card to travel provides at least a 20% discount on every single trip compared to paying cash. In actual fact, until 31st January 2023, AT HOP card gets you 50% off ticket prices (excluding Waiheke and Rakino ferry tickets).

2. Devonport & Mount Victoria

Getting out of the CBD while in Auckland is a must. You would not believe the contrast in surroundings a 12-minute ferry ride will get you. Head to the Downtown Ferry port and head to Devonport (using your AT HOP card of course!). Take in the charm of the 1950s esc town and begin your ascent up Mount Victoria. On a clear day, this is one of the best spots to see Auckland from a totally different perspective. Not only that, you can truly see how it gets the name the ‘City Of Sails’

Why not also take in the beautiful Cheltenham beach and surrounding areas to really complete the day? You will not be disappointed, that I can guarantee. Take a time out at the brilliant Milk Bar just up the road from Cheltenham beach for some awesome milkshakes and smoothies too!

3. The Viaduct

The Viaduct area, Auckland

The Viaduct Harbour is a fun and vibrant waterside venue at the heart of Auckland’s waterways. There’s always something exciting to experience here. From intimate cocktail functions to an international sailing regatta.

Viaduct Harbour is the venue for an array of land or water-based events and functions. There are a variety of quality open spaces, function centres, charter boats, restaurants and bars to choose from. This premier waterfront precinct is well-positioned to help you deliver a unique inner-city experience.

4. Mount Eden

Mount Eden, or Maundawhau, is the highest volcano in Auckland. From the summit at 196m, you can enjoy some spectacular views of the city and its harbours. Its large, well-preserved crater contained within the summit cone is an impressive 50 metres in depth.

The dormant volcano is around 2.5 miles (4 kilometres) out of the CBD and can be easily accessed by public transport or on foot. It is a great escape from the city centre without even leaving. This really is a unique experience to have within the largest city in New Zealand.
