In what was previously seen as a seedy and unsafe area of Sydney, Kingscross and Potts Point is now a bustling cosmopolitan district that would rival even the Melbourne hipster scene. What’s more, a swing into Sydney’s Potts Point wouldn’t be complete without a stay at Mad Monkeys Downtown. So, find out what is in store with a stay in Sydney’s coolest hangout.
Mad Monkeys Downtown
Mad Monkeys brand is one that will be familiar within the backpacker scene. The group has 7 hostels within Australia, each with its own personality.
My first experience with Mad Monkeys was in the vibrant Kings Cross area. ‘Mad Monkeys Downtown’ is newly renovated and situated on the famous Darlinghurst Road and in the heart of Potts Point. The hostel itself boasts an array of different room options from privates to dorms over two levels. Not to mention a large and cozy TV area, chilled-out central courtyard, and a killer rooftop hangout. All are encased within a chilled and friendly atmosphere.
Fitting with the true Mad Monkey style, the hostel offers themed events across the week such as ‘Beers & BBQ’, ‘Nacho Tuesdays’ and ‘Movie Nights’, all free of charge. I know you, backpackers… I had you at the word ‘FREE’. Not only this, they have organised bar crawls with opportunities to mix with their local sister hotels, Mad Monkeys Kingscross and Mad Monkeys Bayswater.
So Why Stay Downtown?
As well as the location, vibe, and fresh renovated feel, the hostel offers the following luxuries to budget-oriented travellers:
- FREE Fast Wifi
- FREE gym access
- FREE bag storage
- XBOX & large TV in a cosy living environment
- Privacy screens on all dorm beds
- FREE organised weekly events including free food & drinks
- Female only dorm options
- Laundry & lockers (own padlock required)
Mad Monkeys Downtown is also open to long-term options. So if you’re looking to settle in Sydney for a longer period of time, look no further than right here!
Rooftop Vibes
What city stay is complete without a rooftop bar? Potts Point has an array of rooftop bar options. But why even venture out? Downtown has an incredible newly renovated rooftop area equipped with seating, powerpoints, views, and even its own BBQ. Make sure you hit up the ‘BBQ & Beer’ afternoons from 2pm on Saturdays. Did I mention this is a FREE event? That’s right, free food and beer on a Saturday afternoon! What more can I say?
The Potts Point Vibe
By day, this eastern Sydney province is a hive of activity among the vibrant cafe scene and trendy independent shops. The cosmopolitan hub of Macleay street is where you will find locals heading for bistro brunches and happy hour sips. Step out of the hostel and you find yourself on Llankelly Place. This is a foodie’s hub of hip multicultural eateries right on your doorstep. Don’t be surprised if you have to queue to get into some of these local favourites, especially for brunch, but worth the wait!
By night, the area is buzzing with busy bars, excellent eateries and thrilling theatre options. It really is a hotspot for all. It is no wonder Mad Monkeys actually has three hostels in close proximity, Downtown, Kingscross and Bayswater. Again, each of these has its own personality.
Sundays bring the market to Kingscross with a smorgasbord of craft and food vendors galore. As if you needed any more excuses to book your stay.
Plan Ahead
Australia has now reopened its borders to travellers once again it is highly advised to plan ahead. Right now, it seems gone are the days of walking into a hostel and finding a room. Covid has unfortunately taken it’s toll across the industry, with many budget accommodation options falling victim. Get in touch today to book your trip for an incredible Ozzy adventure.
